GAME DESCRIPTION:
Berserk follows the same story as the manga. You're in control of Guts a badass swordsman with the power to induce his rage and go Berserk. In the story you'll also see Griffon, who Guts fought and lost to and Zodd, who Guts will fight early on. Berserk has some excellent cut scenes that really capture the art style of the game. You have some incredibly detailed characters and some good voice talent to compliment it. It is a plus to see that the series made such a seamless transition from manga pages to a full fledged 3D game. The monsters you fight look incredible too. The snow monsters blob out of the ground to surround you and fighting a huge Zodd is incredible.
You'll be doing a lot of fighting in Berserk, in fact that is all you'll be doing. Guts can unleash a standard attack with the square button and a heavy attack by pressing triangle. You'll find out quickly that pressing square over and over is the best strategy in the game. Guts will endlessly swing his sword back and forth as long as you keep hitting square. This will be enough to beat most of the enemies and some bosses. While this certainly looks cool, it would have been better if the game had a set combo system. Instead it feels like you don't really have a lot of control over Guts. You're making him slash his sword, but you can't control the direction of the slash. As you rack up kills Guts' berserk meter fills up. By pressing R2 you can use the meter at any time to give Guts increased speed and more damage. When he's under berserk mode Guts can demolish a bunch of enemies at once.
Guts has a couple of tools that you can get access to by holding down L1 or L2. The first set are a bunch of weapons. He's got a flamethrower arm, grenades, kunai and a crossbow gun. For the most part the tools are useless. The kunai doesn't actually kill anything and the crossbow gun makes Guts stand in one place so he's left out in the open. The grenades and flame thrower can be useful for taking out groups of enemies. Although, once you use any weapons you have to wait before you can use it again. Both of the useful weapons have a wait time of a couple of minutes, which just makes them worthless. Guts can also call on fairies to give him a defense bonus for a little bit of time or heal his wounds.
Berserk also has a really basic level up system for Guts. You increase Guts' attack, rage time, or defense. Although, you'll need a lot of experience to upgrade anything. The main way to get experience is to chain enemies that you're fighting. If you successfully kill monster after monster you'll get a combo bonus. Most of the time, this bonus is much larger than the amount of experience you would get from just killing each enemy individually. The problem with this is that the experience system is set up in such a way that you must sit there and fight the same things for hours if you want to make your character a little bit stronger.
Another huge flaw in the game is that there is nothing to do besides fight, fight and fight. Once you clear a set of monsters from a screen, more will immediately spawn in their place. If you're the type of player who stands there to stop and kill everything you'll be waiting forever. Alternatively, you can choose not to fight at all and keep pressing the circle button to run past enemies. As you progress in different chapters you can expect more killing or more dashing away, whatever your gameplay style is. In any event all of this makes Berserk extremely repetitive and pretty boring to play.
Boss fights within the levels spice the game up a bit. During a boss fight you're put in an enclosed arena where you go head to head with a huge monster. Guts can use all of his normal attacks and tools to fight. If you successfully parry or block an attack you'll move into a full motion fighting sequence where you have to mash a button to win a duel. These dueling sequences look incredibly cool. One of them has quickly sidestep, parry an oncoming attack and then deal out a low slash. If Guts can do all this how come you can't do it while you're actually controlling him?
Berserk is a game that doesn't live up to the potential it could have had. It ends up being a below par hack fest. If it wasn't for the excellent presentation and graphics even fans of the series would shun it. If you really, really, really like the manga there is a chance that you'll enjoy playing as Guts. On the other hand, there isn't enough of a "game" in Berserk to recommend it to anyone else.
Pros: Great presentation and some excellent cut scenes/animations.
Cons: All of the flashiness doesn't make up for boring gameplay.
Import friendly? (Literacy level required: 2)
The game is easy enough to learn and figure out without knowing any Japanese. If you want to understand the story, you're on your own.
Overall opinion
Even with the high amount of production that was put into the game, Berserk just isn't a solid action title and it's a mediocre hack and slash title at best.

AEON FLUX [NTSC - PS2DVD]
Aeon Flux [NTSC - PS2DVD] [rapidshare]
Publisher: Majesco
Developer: Terminal Reality
Genre: Action
Release Date: November 11, 2005
Players supported: 1
Final Review Rating: 3.5 out of 5 (Good!)
SCREENSHOTS:
GAME DESCRIPTION:
Based on both the MTV Liquid TV animated series and the recent live-action movie, Aeon Flux the videogame is a lot better than most multi-tiered media products - but that only places it in the average category.
Aeon Flux is a hot looking, futuristic secret agent babe that has more in common with Batman than James Bond. She's got some wicked moves and an assortment of gadgets at her disposal that she uses to foil enemies, solve puzzles and gain access to platform-style areas. She's as deadly as she is mysterious. If anything, you can say she's seriously misunderstood.
There is a storyline here somewhere but it's so convoluted and presented so haphazardly that's it's almost impossible to give it a simple overview. The animated series was an artful, adult, anime production that defied convention. It was sexy, racy, violent and mysterious, often culminating with the death of Aeon at the end of each episode. A lot of things were never fully explained and we were never able to fully explore Aeon as a person. The game attempts to keep this mystery alive but it only succeeds in alienating us from her. Since we are actually playing as her in most levels it would only be appropriate to have a little more insight into her psyche.
Bregna is the walled city where Aeon resides. She is involved in a freedom fighting movement against an oppressive government. Her nemesis is one, Trevor Goodchild, whom she alternately hates and loves. Her world is one of animal lust and barbaric violence. Aeon takes no prisoners and while there are information capsules to collect they never explain anything more than what you need to complete the next goal in a mission.
Missions are unfocused and never seem to relate to the big picture. You don't always get to play as Aeon and these alternate perspectives do nothing to make things any clearer. I do appreciate the unpredictable nature of the gameplay but I can't help but think it's just too messy and convenient for the writers with all these unresolved issues.
With an assortment of moves such as kicks, punches, blocks, jumps, grapples and the ability to run up wall, Aeon is a formidable weapon in and of herself. She has an inventory of gadgets to help her solve puzzles and gain access to restricted areas. She can also hack into weapons systems such as gun turrets and use them against her enemy.
The targeting system is automatic and will only lock-on to the enemy you're facing. When confronted by more than a couple of goons this can really spell trouble as you'll have to tap dance around the buttons to ready your weapon, face your enemy and fire. One of Aeon's trademark moves is the Flux which warps time in a bullet-time fashion, slowing down all elements in the game except for your character. This will help you when you're up against multiple enemies.
The levels are huge and separated by checkpoints. You can get around using a mini-ball which you steer around challenging courses consisting of high, narrow ledges and ramps. It's a lot like Super Monkey Ball but even more frustrating because you tend to fall off a lot more. There is definitely something afoot with the balancing physics.
Some of these futuristic environments don't live up to expectations. I expect a lot more imagination 400 years in the future. The graphics aren't even as good as the decade-old anime series. There's lot of polys and reused low-res textures that make it look like you've already been to some of the new areas. Multiple enemies onscreen contribute to some slowdown and there are lots of repeated phrases.
Charlize Theron stars in the film and lends her voice talent to the game. I admire an actor that supports their character through the various mediums. She does a great job as do most of the other actors.
There's not much for replay value, although you can play through the game as the various characters that you unlock. Overall Aeon Flux is a somwhat confusing game that doesn't live up to the inspired madness of the animated series; it does however manage to be a whole lot better than some of the games featuring female heroes.

GAME SCREENSHOTS:
GAME DESCRIPTION - FULL REVIEW:
The comparisons of Driver: Parallel Lines to GTA are unavoidable. This fourth installment of the Driver series is best described as a blend of the two games. It has the familiar Driver mechanics with a GTA-inspired gameplay. There's still a lot of racing but there is plenty to do outside of your vehicle as well.
As far as variety goes, developers Reflections Interactive have certainly delivered. I know that there are those purists that would prefer that the series focus on racing, since that's what the premise of the series originally but you can't fault a company for trying something different with a tired concept that may have run it course. There's a lot of money to be made courting the GTA crowd and I would be in there like a dirty shirt myself if I had the option. The developers went out of their way to not make Parallel Lines appear like a GTA rip off, but once you enter into the neighborhood you're going to have to dodge the slings and arrows. At the same time they could have upgraded the Driver engine as the controls and physics are too similar to past games.
TK is the star of the show. He's the driver. He makes his living chauffeuring the criminal element to and from jobs. It's New York City in the late 70s and TK is enjoying life in the fast lane. He's got money, babes and all the sex, drugs and rock and roll that one man can handle. He's also in for plenty of action with car chases, shootings and other missions. With the soundtrack from the era including tunes from Bowie to Blondie, the cool fashion of the era and the big muscle cars, the essence of the Seventies is recreated to good effect. But things change. TK is framed and sent up the river for nearly 30 years. It's 2006 when he finally gets released and he's really pissed. I would be too if I went from Alice Cooper to hip hop. Bent on revenge, TK makes it his mission to find those responsible for his incarceration and deal them some long-awaited justice.
There is only big story mode in this game. Everything is contained within. It's one huge adventure where there's seldom a dull moment. There are some really difficult missions, some which are all but impossible to complete the first time through. This trial and error style of gameplay is not my favorite but it's more of a side dish than the main course. The developers have a knack for mixing things up. This is evident by the nearly 30-year time span that takes place in the game as TK spends the best years of his life behind bars. When he gets out things are a little different. Although the city remains largely unchanged, the vehicles are fast and lighter. Definitely a big change from the bulky, heavy mastodons of the 70s. You'll notice that the fashion also changes and depending on your age or taste, you'll notice that the music takes a turn for the worse.
There are some 80 different vehicles available in this game including cars, trucks, vans, busses, limos, motorcycles and even tractors. All of the vehicles handle exceptionally well. They are incredibly responsive and once you get the hang of powersliding you'll be able to race through the streets and turn corners at top speed. Outrunning the cops, as in previous Driver games is not difficult. Just outdistance them and take a few corners and they'll forget all about you. Since the game is free-roaming you can even take some shortcuts through the parks. For some reason the cops get confounded on grass. The police just don't seem to like to break the law, even when engaged in a full-out pursuit of a murderous thug like yourself that is obviously a threat to the public's safety.
There are lots of pedestrians on the streets but it's really the traffic that you have to look out for. Pedestrians will slow you down for a second as you either run them over or send them flying through the air. It's overkill to be sure and detracts from any kind of realism established by the excellent cinematic cutscenes. Fortunately the vehicles are responsive enough to dodge both pedestrians and traffic at high speeds. The motorcycle is the fastest of the vehicles and it can be really thrilling to drive through the streets of New York. There is a huge map of the city and while its size is very impressive the buildings are repetitive and the textures are very rough looking. If you're paying attention to what you're supposed to be doing you probably won't notice these flaws but it's my job to point them out to you just to ruin your fun.
Stealing cars, getting in and out of them, targeting and shooting are all very simple commands and usually require the use of only one button. There is an in-game training mode that is disguised as part of the story. It will put you in the middle of a police chase and teach you the ropes as you go. With your weapon drawn you can lock-on to targets and strafe at the same time to avoid being hit. You can also freestyle it by taking the targeting system off. By leaning out of the window of your moving vehicle you can now shoot when you drive. This is a great feature and adds some dimension to the gameplay. Since missions are divided into driving and on-foot activities, there are separate wanted meters that will determine the level of your criminal activity in either area. One meter will determine the level of crimes committed with your vehicle while the other meter is for crimes that the cops actually see you commit. If you see that the coast is clear you can practically do anything that you want and get away with it. What the cops don't see won't hurt them - or you. But if they see you they will be on your ass - and this includes speeding. If you can't outrun them, you can always try to switch vehicles or run away on foot. As long as you do it out of sight this will typically throw them off.
The one thing that I hate about the game is that after all the cool 70's music, we are subjected to this present day crap that is so one-dimensional the CD that it's released on only has one side - ba doop. But seriously folks…The cutscenes are great. They really tell the tale with gusto. The acting is very good and the writing is good enough to base a movie on. Graphically the game lacks polish. It has a gritty cartoon look to it that is obviously influenced by Vice City. The vehicle damage looks very cheesy, as the cars just seem to leave part lying around instead of displaying realistic crumpling and particle effects at the time of impact.
Overall the game is not in the same league as GTA. It tries too hard to emulate the series than to find its own original niche. It could piss off fans of both Driver and GTA due to the unoriginal gameplay and shift in direction but there's no reason the average gamer can't have a ball with this game.

TOCA RACE DRIVER 3 [PAL - PS2DVD]
TOCA Race Driver 3 [PAL - PS2DVD] [rapidshare]
Publisher: Codemasters
Developer: Codemasters
Genre: Racing, Driving
Release Date: February 21, 2006
Players: 8
Final Review Score: 8.0 out of 10
SCREENSHOTS:
GAME DESCRIPTION:
TOCA Race Driver 3 takes the variety of motorsport experiences available in "Race Driver 2" and expanding on it even further, so no matter what your taste in racing, you'll find something to suit you. Featuring the British GT championship, series stalwarts the DTM and Aussie V8 Supercars, Sprint Cars, Rallying, and open wheel racing all the way from karts to the BMW Williams Grand Prix Cars, and much more TOCA Race Driver 2006 has something for everyone. Race on tracks from all over the world, take the story-driven "world tour" mode if you want to get straight to where the action is, or for the people wanting the nuts and bolts, take the "Pro Career" mode and work you way up the ladder in different disciplines of motorsport, aiming for the pinnacle of your chosen field.
The main crux of the game is the World Tour mode that offers 100 individual championships covering 35 different racing disciplines. What that means in practice is that you can pretty much race any car you’ve ever imagined including open wheel, stock cars, GT, historic, off-road, rally, supertrucks, go-karts, and even Off Road Monster Trucks.
In game and you have the choice of manipulating your cars performance, or just getting on with racing and the thing we love the most about Toca Race Driver 3 is the approachability of it all. While we could have spent a good 10 to 15 minutes prepping our car before racing we could also just get on with racing.
Purists will be pleased to hear that the cars handle differently depending on what you are driving and likewise driving on the verge will have an adverse affect also. If it’s not the scenery that affects your driving the damage on the car certainly will. In one race we were racing cars started whizzing past us only for us to hear moments later we’d damaged our gearbox in a collusion just moments before. When it comes to graphics they are good, but perhaps not as good as GT4, but then the racing and speed more than makes up for it. Additionally you don’t have to work your way through that annoying driving lesson mission before you start either.
There's also standard split-screen multiplayer, system link play, and online on all versions of the game. The PS2 version we tested only supports eight players online, but the players of the PC and Xbox versions will be able to play a further 4 players bringing the total to 12.

GAME DESCRIPTION:
It's strange how certain games are tied to a system so tightly that you don't believe they'll ever work on anything else. Outrun 2 is such a game, with fans swearing blind that it could never work as well as it does on the Xbox. So, when SEGA announced OutRun 2006: Cost 2 Coast for The PS2, Xbox and PSP (plus the PC) the news was met with much scepticism. Well, it's time to start believing as OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast might just be the best arcade racer available on all three systems.
Once again in the hands of the supremely capable Sumo Digital (OutRun 2 on Xbox, Virtua Tennis on PSP), Coast 2 Coast is basically OutRun 2 superfied: it's like every OutRun 2 fan's dream come true. What you get is the full arcade version of OutRun 2, the full arcade version of OutRun 2 SP, an impressive challenge mode, online play, tons of unlockables... I think you get the idea. There's a lot crammed into this game. On the gameplay side of things the biggest change is the newly introduced slipstreaming. By tailing opponents or other traffic you gain extra speed, propelling your car past your rivals. This has been implemented across the game modes, and while long-time fans may argue that it spoils the game, I found it to be an excellent addition to the arcade-style racing. Everything else is pretty much as it was, but when it was so good before, there really wasn't any point in changing it. If any game handles powersliding better than this, please let me know. The core game mode is undoubtedly Coast 2 Coast. This is a series of skill-based challenges and quirky mini-game-esque scenarios. Flagman challenges test your driving skill, asking you to beat rivals in straight out races or slipstream and drift challenges. Girlfriend challenges make up the other part of the Coast 2 Coast mode and they're an altogether different kettle of fish. You drive through a complete course as you would in the arcade game, but each section is peppered with challenges, such as avoiding alien abduction, smashing into a certain number of cars, overtaking challenges and more. Once you've completed a stage you can select it again from the menu to try and achieve that elusive AAA ranking. ... each section is peppered with challenges, such as avoiding alien abduction... While simply throwing your Ferrari sideways around a corner is reason enough to keep playing, the reward system in the game is worth equal praise. Whether you're playing for fun or attempting a new high-score, you earn OutRun miles. Every single moment you spend on the road is worth something, even if you restart a challenge or quit before the end. It's a brilliant system and makes playing the game even more worthwhile. You're obviously not earning all these miles for nothing, and Sumo has included a shop full of goodies to tempt you. After a few hours with the game you'll have enough miles to gorge on a few items, with Ferraris, courses, challenges and extra music all available. The system works perfectly for everyone as it doesn't restrict the unlockables to the experienced players and adds an addictive 'just one more race' quality.
The final piece to the puzzle is online play. Sumo has done an excellent job here too, with full online play for up to six players, online scoreboards, plenty of game settings and a friends list available in every version of the game. Again, the PSP version just feels more special, being able to sit anywhere that's got a wireless hotspot and play people from all over. There's also local wireless play if you find anyone who's up for a game. From a technical point of view the Xbox version is the winner, with a smoother frame rate being the most noticeable difference. The PlayStation 2 version is no slouch though, with slowdown only occurring when the screen is filled with cars and on certain sections of track. Both home console versions support widescreen and 60Hz, and the PlayStation 2 version even supports progressive scan - something not possible on a PAL Xbox. The frame rate on the PSP version is a tad disappointing, but it's easy to look past, and the great draw distance and sense of speed has been reproduced admirably on the handheld. OutRun's soundtrack is widely regarded as one of the best ever and the tunes here live up to the past games. As well as the standard set that includes Magical Sound Shower, Splash Wave, Shiny World and all the rest, there are numerous versions from the 80s and Euro remixes, plus you can buy new tunes in the shop and listen to your own tunes in the Xbox version. Effects all sound great, but on occasion they can sound a little out of place, with cars that you passed at about 2 Mph due to a recent crash causing the same whooshing sound as a 100Mph + overtaking manoeuvre. The soundtrack's the real star though, with a collection of tunes that you'll be humming and whistling for months. No matter which system you own you can't go wrong with OutRun 2006. For the absolute best version you need to check out the Xbox game, but other than a few slight technical differences and some control irks you'd be hard pushed to tell it apart from the PlayStation 2 version. The game really shines on Sony's portable too, with what seems like the perfect set-up for a handheld game. PlayStation 2 to PSP link-up is also a great feature if you want to play the game at home and while travelling. If the idea of powersliding brings about even the slightest tingle of excitement in you, OutRun 2006 needs to be in your collection - the version you choose is up to you.
